misery house

mixed media, handmade frame

A piece for an Edits contest.Edits is a temporary exhibition at Central Station, where the designers and illustrators inspired by Amsterdam's museums.
Edits is a temporary exhibition at Central Station, where clause designers take inspiration from the museums of Amsterdam.
I've chosen an Hermitage museum as an inspiration source. i thought it would be interesting for me as its a bit metaphorical:  Hermitage Amsterdam is a branch of the famous Hermitage museum in St.Petersburg, there are exhibitions composed of the rich collection of Hermitage museum. I was borned in St.Petersburg and by my cultural and lingvistic background I can consist myself as Russian, even i lived there only a year and all my life till I turned 18 I lived in Lithuania and have a lithuanian nationality. Hermitage Amsterdam is just as me: a part of different culture in Holland.
While visiting it i was fascinated by old ortodox iconography, contemporary architecture of the building with lots of space, white color, lights and air. Since 16 to the middle of 20th centuy hermitage Amasterdam used to be a retire house for poor and disabled women. In this painting I wanted to express my bunch of impressions after visiting the museum and its history.

sleeping mode is personal

Reality and dreams mix up and its so hard to separate them from each other. I fall asleep at my working table and wake up on a singing white dune. I wake up in a bus №6 though i closed my eyes on a skyscrapers roof. Like Tarot cards divination my unconcious reflects past and future and no present simple. In fact dreams is nothing more but a reflection of our experience, hopes, aspirations and fears. They exist on dark side of the looking glass while we stay on the other one. Dreams are incorporeal unreal abstraction. But still sometimes waking up I feel last winters bitter aftertaste on lips and sand from these faraway countries I've never been to cracking on my teeth. Maybe all last year revolutions are just a shadow play on a mirrors surface. Maybe I'm still asleep.

Sometimes you just stand at the parapet, glancing at the sky and water and vice versa. It's almost dark and friends are inviting you to a concert for a few beers or somewhere else. But you can't be bothered. You just stand at the canal watching sky and water. And if you screw your eyes, city lights turn into solid continuous line and sky and water become one.
It feels like if I would turn upside down and feel no difference. In a moments like this i smoke a lot, feeling how my finger tips are getting cold.
You stand like if you were singing 2.99 cent blues in an empty barrel house. Spectators already left, but it doesn't matter. It's one actor and spectator at the same time theater.Memories knurl reminding of childhood, teenage riots,  rock-n-roll, long winters, rapid summertime, you, you and you. I recall kitchens where the light was never turned down low, wine was finished too fast and we had to run to the night shop again and again. Kitchens still full of our voices and laughter echoes. Like in a kaleidoscope faces sweep over: some names you hardly remember, some don't mean anything anymore, some hadn't seen for ages but during rare meetings still the same warmth and tenderness, but now we have to separate quicker- some much to do, diplomas, work, ambitions, goals in life, some already are family people with children.
Love to some people you carry through years. In the most sensitive muscle in only for them drawn room they live inside. And when you miss them too much in this room becomes so hot, that you could burn yourself.
Yet life is such an amusing thing- despite all the odds your insides never stay empty. Even if it happens, it's just temporary. Ever as there appears a free space inside it very soon refills. (Re)fluxes. And to be honest everything always moves for the better. Nothing passes without leaving a trace, it's like tree's age circles. You change, grow up and sometimes even become a bit wiser. Your experience credit all the time tops up, otherwise you already died without even noticing it.
And when I think about it all while watching the sky and water in the end i deny all the invitations. "Sorry, I'm tired and might go home. Anyway, have fun, guys! You know I love you." And I go home. With no turning lights on set up the kettle and just look through a window. Go to sleep. Just because tomorrow gonna be a brand new day and I believe it's gonna be only better.
Just because life is beautiful.
It's just sometimes you feel distorted.

friends

changing a bike is like changing a partner. its never easy starting a new relationship: you know the principles, but its`never the same, it takes time and patience to get used to. my Gazelle was stolen. it was the best bike i ever had. dexterious, light, fast and well balanced. hope you're in a good arms now, girl. got another one, trying to get used to it, but its such a different character. it will take some time to get on, hopefully we'll become good friends.

words spoken are untrue

there's always a distance between what you think and what you say. doesn't matter how said is close to what you actually meant, it's never the same. always distorted, turning words value into ashes.its not that we all lie, but due to these reasons our words become no true.human language is too heavy to express exactly all the subtilities of feeling and thoughts.

thanks so much,L. for a wonderful sunday!

something important

nothing heals better than seaside.shells in my pockets, sand in my shoes - i felt like coming back home. no time, close your eyes and listen to the music of waves and wind.nothing really matters, the only things that's real is a big hard sun and a deep blue sea. if you separate me from this for too long i choke. i still miss pines and dune

awakening

thanks again, Mr. Charles

"Nothing was ever in tune. People just blindly grabbed at whatever there was: communism, health foods, zen, surfing, ballet, hypnotism, group encounters, orgies, biking, herbs, Catholicism, weight-lifting, travel, withdrawal, vegetarianism, India, painting, writing, sculpting, composing, conducting, backpacking, yoga, copulating, gambling, drinking, hanging around, frozen yogurt, Beethoven, Back, Buddha, Christ, TM, H, carrot juice, suicide, handmade suits, jet travel, New York City, and then it all evaporated and fell apart. People had to find things to do while waiting to die. I guess it was nice to have a choice." (c)

"dentity". (expo)sed works

Ola Lanko. Watching
1985 Ukraine
Ola has experience with many camera’s, perhaps by being a photojournalist for a period. The educational background shifts from art towards sociology, a degree, to photojournalism and back to art again. You can see this process in the work presented.
Her photography grows to be more experimental after a switch of education after two years at the Royal Academy of Den Hague (KABK) to the Gerrit Rietveld academy.

Tariq Heijboer. Nuwaiba'
1991 The Netherlands
Tariq has a large field of interest. His works include a range from paintings, drawings, photographs and collages. His personal interest and previous education of design made the artist look towards abstracts and relation inside his works. Tariq is looking for this perfect point and his works can vary in result but share his authenticity.

Sara Stenderup Glahn. Besides them, me
Denmark
Sara first introduced her series of ‘youngsters’ to the Ukrop team, after a investigation of her works we stumbled upon a small booklet made by Sara. Immediately it was unanimously decided to be right for this exhibition.
Words from the artist:
“Besides them, me”
location: Roskilde Festival, Denmark, summer 2008
I had already decided that it should not be a project about the music and the concerts, but about the sensation of being able to feel alone and isolated while being surrounded by thousands of people with the same interest as you.
I keep attending this festival year by year, and I can’t remake these photographs, I will not even try to. I figured out how I feel and I processed it into this book. So it’s a done job. Let me know how you feel about it.

Inga Erdmane. 8th of March
Latvia
Inga her experimental work within the realm of photography and video show a great expertise and knowledge of material. When using the unexpected Inga manages to amaze the viewer with the result and finish. Within this frame of illusion and reality the artist makes it hard to make a distinction to where her work ends and where it begins and by that how to place it. Some might see this as a difficulty, but others and her peers praise this fact.

Lyubov Matyunina. Still dead
1985 Russia
Lyubov brings the joy of life into her work, her paintings, drawings and video. She often uses an anarchistic approach, if such a thing is possible, but playfully works with a serious undertone. The artist is currently enrolled at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.
Miglė Kazlauskaitė. Beachbabes
1991 Lithuania
Migle has an absolute eye for perfection not many have, meticulous in her works to such a level she does not need to make larger works. Despite the fact she knows how, the artist is able to use her academic style and work on a smaller scale. Interested in design and the manufacturing processes of various crafts the artist is now enrolled at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

Jevgenija Ovsianikova. "Little bird" extract from a book
1988 Lithuania
Exploding with minuscule detail the works of Jevgenija contain depictions of her stories and feelings. In a storm the artist takes you on a journey wandering and wondering
Jevgenija is enrolled at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.

Tariq Heijboer. Bombing of Rotterdam

Tiberius Sanders. Black and White
1990 The Netherlands
Tiberius has a very raw approach to art. Hanging his works in ways others would make a suggestion to pin it straight for him, already surpassing the thought it was mend to be like this. His works for the exhibition are a few of a large series he made on the same subject. The contrast the artists wants to show in `black and white’ is also much about the rebellious nature of his character. Tiber studies fine art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague.

Rein Sanders. Faces of (un)free
1986 Netherlands
A lifelong witness of the works of his father (Willem Sanders) Rein learned many basic techniques in drawing, painting, history and philosophy. Living and working together with his brother Tiberius Sanders (1990) in Amsterdam. His work defines freedom and often form an experiment itself.

Stijn van Kervel. Gun rules by three shells
1987 The Netherlands
Stijn sees pure form, his way of treating art is often based on isolating pure form. Repetition and patterns show his architectural background and interest. The artist is now looking forward to experimenting in different fields of art, broadening his horizon. The work ‘Gun ruled by three shells (2011)‘, a photogram, is one of the first examples of a new experimental direction for the artist himself abandoning his comfort zone.
Stijn is a student at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.

Alexander Höglund. Fantastic Future I
1984 Sweden
Höglunds perfect politician in ‘Fantastic Future I (2011)’ embodies the complex phenomenon of a somehow impossible wish or demand. The work is actually a printed photograph of many printed photographs revealing a layered structure returning to the enigmatic starting point.
Word of the artist: The project touches upon the subject of identity by creating an emptyshell or an ”idea” of the leader we all need!? Irony, humour, economics, identity and political history create the basic foundation for this
work and the part shown above.

Konstantin Guz’
1983 Russia
Konstantin Guz’ continues the Russian tradition in abstract photography. Auto-didactic but recently enrolled at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam to further sharpen his view and develop more in the various forms of the arts in general.

Tariq Heijboer. Reflection

Jevgenija Ovsianikova. Mindfuck

Konstantin Guz’. Protest (inofficial NAHUJ!)

Rein Sanders. Towards the ceiling

Lyubov Matyunina. Thoughts

Konstantin Guz’. Finger

Ania Drupka. Identity
1985 Poland
Without fear Ania does not make any concessions, her works are such embodiments of thought and statement that often they can only be presented in a direction action from herself or literally herself. Strong but still elegant. A simple every day observation but an incredible train of thought, a twist and a stab towards present day normality.
